Sport's greatest cover up

During the Cold War, the East German authorities decided to target the Olympic Games to promote the prowess of the nation. They instituted a highly successful doping policy and managed to turn the small country into a sporting superpower. East Germany went from a modest performance in the 1960 Olympics to winning 90 medals just eight years later. Discovery asks how the government was able to create such an elaborate system – involving scientists, doctors, coaches, athletes and government officials – which remained largely undetected over two decades. 5 August

The mystery of the stranded dolphins

In a single day in June 2008 nearly 100 dolphins became stranded around Cornwall, in the UK. Despite the tireless efforts of marine rescue workers 26 of them died. Local people believe that a naval sonar experiment is responsible for this unexplained mass stranding, but is there any evidence of this? In One Planet, Sue Broom investigates what could have caused such an unusual and tragic event.
