They instituted a highly successful doping policy and managed to turn the small country into a sporting superpower. East Germany went from a modest performance in the 1960 Olympics to winning 90 medals just eight years later. Discovery asks how the government was able to create such an elaborate system – involving scientists, doctors, coaches, athletes and government officials – which remained largely undetected over two decades. 5 August Audio preview Assignment: Sudan While international attention has been focused on Darfur, southern Sudan has been struggling for independence. Despite the tireless efforts of marine rescue workers 26 of them died. Local people believe that a naval sonar experiment is responsible for this unexplained mass stranding, but is there any evidence of this?
