Press Release from Mr.Sukhpal Singh Khaira MLA

Press Release 29-07-09

The continuous and long absence of the Chief Minister from official work as highlighted by The Tribune today to campaign for by-elections particularly his son Sukhbir Badal’s election is a clear indication that the interest of the people and the state are secondary to Mr. Badal. The CM and his brigade of Minister’s are hell bent to influence the results of these three by-elections in their favour by hook or crook.

Only during the recent budget session the figure’s of Govt. reflected a poor fiscal state of Punjab with a towering public debt of Rs. 63519 crores and Rs. 4233 crores as revenue deficit. There is a huge debt burden of Rs. 35000 crores on the farmers of Punjab leading to unabated suicides in the state. Basic priority sector’s of Education, Health, Power and Employment are in shambles but instead of focusing on the issue’s of the people the CM and his govt. have preferred to campaign for his son and other elections.

It is also an irony that during the 50 years of Badal’s political journey and four terms as Chief Minister the farmers are under a heavy debt of Rs. 41585 per farmhold compared to an all India average of Rs. 11700 and are committing suicides while the Chief Minister’s family has grown richer with each term acquiring 7 star hotel’s like the Trident in Gurgaon and personal aircrafts to travel, is Sh. Badal really pro former or pro himself question’s the Congress?

In so far the by-elections are concerned The Tribune had recently reported gross violations of the model code of conduct by Sh. Sher Singh Ghubayia MP Ferozepore on assuming the role of a super CM to help Sukhbir Badal win elections. In Kahnuwan over 600 tubewell connections have been issued to farmer’s, pavement of village streets is in full swing, all employee voter’s of the area are being summoned by their superior officers and told to vote for Akali Dal, new pension forms are being filled and beneficiaries of the Atta-Dal scheme are being threatened to either vote for Akali Dal or loose their blue cards. Is there any chance of a free and fair by election under Sh. Badal who is known to corrupt the electoral system? It is a well known fact that it is the Badal family which pioneered the art of corrupting elections with money power, poppy husk and liquor in their home constituencies.

I would like to remind Sh. Badal that only recently the SAD-BJP has been wiped out in the Lok Sabha which was a fair result. Sh. Badal has never repeated a victory in the assembly elections under his leadership, is this not a para meter of his working questions the Congress?

Therefore, the Congress urges Sh. Badal to focus on development issues, try to improve the fiscal health of the State and govern the state in public interest rather than in Sukhbir’s interest.

Sukhpal Singh Khaira

MLA Bholath
