BADAL, SUKHBIR DEMAND PADDY MSP AT RS. 1400,

“CACP RECOMMENDATION UNREALISTIC”

Chandigarh, June 15:  The Chief Minister Punjab, Mr. Parkash Singh Badal today said that the recommendations of Commission for Agriculture Costs & Prices (CACP) for  fixing paddy  MSP at 950 were totally inadequate, unrealistic and therefore, a cruel joke with the beleaguered farming community. “ On top of the gist the so-called hike of Rs. 100 actually works  out to a near Rs. 50 when we factor a bonus of Rs. 50 announced last year into it,” said the Chief Minister in a statement here.

The Chief Minister further said that these recommendations were at total variance with the market realities and have no relation to the input-output ratio. All this merely adds insult to the injury of the farmers.

Meanwhile Deputy Chief Minister and the SAD President  Mr.Sukhbir Singh  Badal has said that he would call on Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh and the other members of the Union Cabinet to demand an appropriate hike in the paddy MSP, with Rs.1400 per quintal at the bare minimum. He said that the decision of the Commission for Agriculture Costs & Prices (CACP) may have been influenced by the anti farmer political thinking of the present central regime.  He said that a permanent  solution to this problem to link MSP of agricultural produce with Wholesale Price Index (WPI) or fix MSP at the cost of input plus 50 % profit as recommended  by Swaminathan Commission and minimizing the intervention of Union Government in fair market play.
