अमरीका के इतिहास के सबसे बड़े निवेश घोटाले के मामले में फ़ाइनेंसर बर्नार्ड मैडॉफ़ को 150 साल क़ैद की सज़ा सुनाई गई है.

न्यूयॉर्क की अदालत ने यह फ़ैसला सुनाया है. निवेशकों को 65 अरब डॉलर का चूना लगाने के मामले में अदालत ने उन्हें दोषी ठहराया था.

इस सज़ा का मतलब ये हुआ कि मैडॉफ़ अपनी बची हुई ज़िंदगी जेल में ही गुज़ारेंगे. जैसे ही अदालत ने मैडॉफ़ को सज़ा सुनाई, वहाँ मौजूद लोगों ने तालियाँ बजाकर इस फ़ैसले का स्वागत किया.

जज डेनी चिन ने फ़ैसला सुनाते हुए कहा कि वे ये संदेश देना चाहते हैं कि मैडॉफ़ का अपराध 'असाधारण दुष्टता' थी.

मैडॉफ़ के वकीलों ने अदालत से उदार रुख़ अपनाते हुए 12 साल की सज़ा देने का अनुरोध किया था.

आरोप

जज डेनी चिन ने मैडॉफ़ को सभी 11 आरोपों में अधिकतम सज़ा दी. इन आरोपों में धोखाधड़ी और काले धन को सफ़ेद करने का आरोप था.

संदेश ज़रूर जाना चाहिए कि मैडॉफ़ का अपराध असाधारण दुष्टता थी. इस तरह व्यवस्था को इस्तेमाल करना न सिर्फ़ ऐसा रक्तहीन अपराध है, जो काग़ज़ पर होता है बल्कि इससे बहुत बड़ा नुक़सान होता है

जज ने कहा, "ये संदेश ज़रूर जाना चाहिए कि मैडॉफ़ का अपराध असाधारण दुष्टता थी. इस तरह व्यवस्था को इस्तेमाल करना न सिर्फ़ ऐसा रक्तहीन अपराध है, जो काग़ज़ पर होता है बल्कि इससे बहुत बड़ा नुक़सान होता है."

उन्होंने कहा कि इस मामले में बहुत बड़ा भरोसा टूटा है. जज चिन ने यह भी बताया कि मैडॉफ़ के न तो किसी परिजन, मित्र और अन्य समर्थकों ने उनके लिए पत्र लिखकर कुछ निवेदन किया.

इस सुनवाई के बाद मैडॉफ़ की पत्नी रूथ ने एक बयान में कहा है कि वो अपने को ठगा हुआ और दिग्भ्रमित महसूस कर रही हैं.

उन्होंने कहा, "इतनी बड़ी धोखाधड़ी करने वाला ये व्यक्ति वो नहीं है, जिसे मैं इतने वर्षों से जानती हूँ."

सज़ा सुनाए जाने से पहले मैडॉफ़ ने इसके लिए माफ़ी मांगी कि उनके कारण उनके परिवार और इस इंडस्ट्री को शर्मसार होना पड़ा है.

मैडॉफ़ ने कहा, "मैं इस पीड़ा और दुख के लिए ज़िम्मेदार हूँ. मैं इसे समझता हूँ." मैडॉफ़ अब अपनी बची हुई ज़िंदगी जेल में गुज़ारेंगे.

अदालत में उनकी धोखाधड़ा के शिकार लोगों को संबोधित करते हुए मैडॉफ़ ने अपने किए पर खेद जताया.

बीबीसी की उत्तरी अमरीकी बिज़नेस संवाददाता मिशेल फ़्लेवरी का कहना है कि धोखा खाए लोग ख़ुश तो हैं लेकिन उनके लिए लड़ाई यही ख़त्म नहीं होती क्योंकि वे अपना कुछ पैसा वापस हासिल करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं.

सुनवाई के दौरान बर्नार्ड मैडॉफ़ ने स्वीकार किया था कि उन्होंने हज़ारों निवेशकों को पोंज़ी स्कीम के तहत चूना लगाया. ये स्कीम वे 1990 के दशक से चला रहे थे.

बर्नार्ड मैडॉफ़ ने अपना वित्तीय करियर 22 वर्ष की उम्र में पाँच हज़ार डॉलर से शुरू किया था. वर्ष 1960 में उन्होंने बर्नार्ड एल मैडॉफ़ इन्वेस्टमेंट सिक्यूरिटीज़ का गठन किया.

धोखाधड़ी

उनकी कंपनी शेयर बेचने और ख़रीदने वाली सबसे बड़ी कंपनियों में से एक बन गई. और तो और मैडॉफ़ ने नैस्डैक स्टॉक एक्सचेंज के चेयरमैन के रूप में भी काम किया.

पिछले 16 वर्षों में आठ बार मैडॉफ़ की कंपनी की जाँच हुई. लेकिन उनकी कलई उस समय खुली जब विश्वव्यापी मंदी के कारण उन्होंने सात अरब डॉलर की राशि निकालने की कोशिश की.

मैडॉफ़ निवेशकों से पैसा लेते थे और उसे किसी दूसरी जगह निवेश करने का दिखावा करते हुए उसे एक बैंक खाते में ही जमा करते जाते थे.

मैडॉफ़ का तरीक़ा काफ़ी दिलचस्प था. वे निवेशकों को जल्दी ही भुगतान करना शुरू कर देते थे लेकिन यह भुगतान लाभ की रकम से नहीं, बल्कि दूसरे निवेशकों के पैसे से किया जाता था

पॉप स्टार माइकल जैक्सन की माँ ने जैक्सन के तीन बच्चों की देखभाल के लिए अर्ज़ी दाख़िल की है.

न्यायालय के दस्तावेज़ के मुताबिक़ जैक्सन की माँ कैथरिन जैक्सन ने अपने बेटे माइकल जैक्सन की मृत्यु के बाद यह याचिका दाख़िल की है.

वैसे कैथरिन जैक्सन पहले से ही माइकल जैक्सन के बच्चों के देख भाल की अस्थाई ज़िम्मेदारी निभा रही हैं. जैक्सन के तीनों बच्चों की उम्र सात से 12 साल के बीच है.

परिवार के वकील लॉंडेल मैकमिलन ने कैथरिन जैक्सन के बारे में कहा, "मुझे नहीं लगता कि ऐसा कोई होगा जो ये सोचे कि जैक्सन के बच्चों के संरक्षण के लिए उनसे बेहतर कोई और होगा."

उन्होंने ये भी कहा कि जैक्सन के दो बड़े बच्चों की माँ डेबरा रोव की ओर से इस बारे में कोई बात सामने नहीं आई है.

जैक्सन का तीसरा बच्चा एक ऐसी माँ से है जिसकी जानकारी छुपा कर रखी गई.

पिछले हफ़्ते माइकल जैक्सन का लॉस एंजेलेस में निधन हो गया था. उनके तीन बच्चे हैं.

उनका बड़ा लड़का माइकल जॉसेफ़ जैक्सन जूनियर 12 साल का है और उसे प्रिंस माइकल के नाम से जाना जाता है.

उनकी दूसरी संतान का नाम पेरिस माइकल कैथरिन जैक्सन है और वह 11 साल की हैं. उनकी तीसरी संतान सात वर्षीय प्रिंस माइकल-II हैं.

लॉस एंजेलेस के एक कोर्ट ने कैथरिन जैक्सन की ओर से दाख़िल याचिका पर सुनवाई की तारीख़ तीन अगस्त तय की है.

उनके बड़े दो बच्चों की माँ डेबरा रोव की और से आधिकारिक तौर पर कोई बात सामने नहीं आई है.

सोमवार को एक अदालत ने माइकल जैक्सन की माँ को पहले ही बच्चों के अस्थायी संरक्षण की ज़िम्मेदारी दे दी थी.

जायदाद के लिए भी

दस्तावेज़ों से ये भी पता चलता है कि कैथरिन जैक्सन ने बच्चों की जायदाद के लिए भी अर्ज़ी दाख़िल कर रखी है लेकिन अभी उनकी जायदाद की क़ीमत मालूम नहीं है.

बच्चे अभी उनकी निगरानी में जैक्सन परिवार के साथ रह रहे हैं.

कोर्ट के काग़ज़ात बताते हैं कि रोव के बारे में कुछ नहीं मालूम है कि वे कहाँ हैं. जबकि तीसरे बच्चे माइकल द्वितीय की माँ के बारे में भी कुछ मालूम नहीं है.

इसमें ये भी कहा गया है कि बच्चे दादी के साथ रहते रहे हैं और उनकी देख-रेख में वे इत्मिनान से हैं और इसलिए उनके संरक्षण के लिए अर्ज़ी दी गई है.

रोव की वकील मार्टा आल्मली ने शनिवार के अपने एक बयान में कहा था, "रोव अभी सिर्फ़ इस बात से चिंतित हैं कि माइकल का परिवार इस समय किस दुखद दौर से गुज़र रहा है."

रोव ने 1996 में जैक्सन से शादी की थी लेकिन 1999 में तलाक़ के लिए अर्ज़ी दे दी थी.

उस वक़्त उन्होंने बच्चों के संरक्षण से इनकार किया था. लेकिन 2003 में उन्होंने उनके संरक्षण की मांग की थी.

The President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil has said that there is a need for comprehensive energy policies at international, regional and national levels for achieving energy security.

She said the volatility in oil prices with its prices going as high as 150 US dollars a barrel points to the challenges that need to be met. She was speaking after inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the Indian Oil Corporations in New Delhi on Tuesday.

She said that there is a need for cooperative framework to be arrived at through openness in global energy market. She has called for energy revolution in the country which would ensure energy security and reliably meet the demand for energy services of all its people.

Addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of Indian Oil Corporation in New Delhi, President said that to supply energy at affordable prices to cater to the needs of all citizen is the need of the hour. She has asked for to use energy resources optimally and efficiently.

The President said Indian Oil Corporation's Kisan Seva Kendras offering a variety of products and services besides auto fuels and kerosene.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Petroleum minister Murli Deora said booking of domestic LPG cylinder refill may be just a text message on mobile phone away.

Deora said the LPG coverage is available to about 50 per cent of our population currently but he said by 2015 it will be extended to 75 per cent of our population.

He said a road map for expanding CNG supplies to 200 cities is being devised.

On this occasion, a commemorative postal stamp was released acknowledging the service of the Indian oil to the people.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to a Ram temple in Ayodhya and condemned the Congress for blaming its senior leaders without yet knowing the contents of the Liberhan Commission report, probing the Babri Masjid demolition.

"There must be a constructive solution to the whole issue as Hindus across the globe want a grand temple be constructed at the disputed site. The BJP also wishes that a temple is constructed there," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.

The Liberhan Commission probing the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid submitted its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday, 17 years after it was formed.

The 16th century mosque was demolished by radical Hindu groups that believed it was built on the birthplace of the Hindu god Ram.

Criticising the Congress for blaming senior party leaders for the demolition, Prasad said: "The report has not been made public yet and the Congress reaction on it is utterly rubbish. We condemn it completely."

"Even before the report is placed in parliament, the Congress has begun conspiracy," he added.

Naming senior BJP leaders L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Ashok Singhal and Vinay Katiyar, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said earlier: "They were all present at the time of demolition. They were all rejoicing and shouted slogans 'Ek Dhakka Aur Do'. The BJP has been the champion of doublespeak." (IANS)

Akash Radio celebrated its seventh anniversary function with Celebrasian’s Asia Cup Polo, which was won by India 6-5. Initially trailing 2-0 from the London team, India then had a wonderful comeback thanks to a wonderful teamwork of Satnam Dhillon, Varun Sharma, Abhimanyu Pathak and royal teammate Maharaj Raghav Raj Singh. The London team gave them a tough fight with John Gunn, Lucas Talamoni, Jack Kidd and Johnny Lynn putting on their best performance. Asia Cup Polo was the last of the event in series of high-profile events organised annually by Mr Neil Sen and Mrs Renu Sen’s Celebrasian. ਮਜਦੂਰਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭੰਨਤੋੜ ਅਤੇ ਸਾੜ ਫੂਕ ਦੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਅੱਜ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਈ ਹਿੰਸਕ ਝੜਪ ਵਿਚ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਵਲੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਰਖਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਬਚਾਓ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਵਾਹ ਹਵਾਈ ਫਾਇਰਿੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਖਤ ਲਾਠੀਚਾਰਜ ਅਤੇ ਭੀੜ ਨੂੰ ਭਜਾਉਣ ਅੱਥਰੂ ਗੈਸ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਛੱਡੇ ਗਏ।

ਇਸ ਹੋਈ ਘਟਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਮਜਦੂਰ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮ ਜਖਮੀ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਇੱਥੇ ਦੱਸਣਯੋਗ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗਰਮੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਮਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਸੀ ਮਜਦੂਰ ਦੁਬੇ ਦੀ ਲਾਸ਼ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਰਾਤ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਾਰਖਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਗੇਟ ਉੱਤੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਦੁਬੇ ਦੀ ਲਾਸ਼ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ ਇਸ ਗੇਟ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਈ ਰਹੀ, ਜਦੋਂ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਖ਼ਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਤਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ।

Honduran president arrested by troops in feared coup

Honduran troops arrested President Manuel Zelaya in an apparent military coup Sunday to stop him pressing ahead with a constitutional referendum, in a move triggering global concern. Skip related content

"Troops have taken the president from his home to the air force (base)," the president's personal secretary, Enrique Reina, told reporters.

"We're in the process of filing an international complaint," he said, as Zelaya was flown out of the Central American nation to regional neighbor Costa Rica.

Arriving just hours later, Zelaya said on Costa Rican television that he was a "victim of kidnapping" and a "coup d'etat," part of a plot by members of the military to remove him from power.

A neighbor told Radiocadena Voces television about 200 troops swooped on Zelaya's home just as dawn was breaking around 6:00 am and his house remained surrounded by heavily armed troops, an AFP photographer saw.

Meanwhile, Honduran Minister of Foreign Relations Patricia Rodas urged Zelaya's supporters to protest his ouster.

"Our president has been kidnapped," she said. "It is by taking to the streets that we can succeed in obtaining his release," she said to the Caracas-based broadcaster Telesur.

She said electricity and phone service was beginning to fail across the country.

Scores of Zelaya supporters in Tegucigalpa quickly massed outside the presidential palace, where young men waving sticks and metal bars were seen riding around in the back of pick-up trucks or setting tires ablaze in the streets, sending thick black smoke into the air.

Other protesters, some with their faces covered, lay down in the streets to prevent the passage of military vehicles, while one man near the palace angrily waved a baseball bat at heavily armed soldiers atop an armored car.

Elected in 2006 for a non-renewable four-year term, Zelaya had planned a vote Sunday asking Hondurans to sanction a future referendum to allow him to run for reelection after his term ends in January.

Zelaya's planned referendum had been ruled illegal by the country's top court and had been opposed by the military, but the president said he planned to press ahead with it anyway and ballot boxes had already been distributed.

US President Barack Obama said he was deeply concerned about the unfolding events in Honduras, as the European Union also called for Zelaya's release.

"I call on all political and social actors in Honduras to respect democratic norms, the rule of law and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter," Obama said in a statement.

"Any existing tensions and disputes must be resolved peacefully through dialogue free from any outside interference."

And Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kohout, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, said: "The EU calls for the urgent release of the president and a swift return to constitutional normality."

The apparent coup is the latest dramatic event in a tense political standoff over the past several days.

Last week Zelaya sacked the country's top military chief, General Romeo Vasquez and also accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Edmundo Orellana, after military commanders refused to distribute ballot boxes for Sunday's vote.

The heads of the army, marines and air force also resigned.

In a tense rebuttal of the president's moves, the Honduran Supreme Court then unanimously voted Thursday to reinstate Vasquez and hundreds of troops massed late last week in the capital Tegucigalpa.

Zelaya, who was elected as a conservative, shifted dramatically to the left during his presidency.

He is the latest in a long list of Latin American leaders, including Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, to seek constitutional changes to expand presidential powers and also ease term limits.

Chavez also denounced Sunday's arrest as a "coup d'etat" and alleged that the United States had a hand in Zelaya's overthrow.

Representatives of American nations held emergency talks Sunday about the situation and condemned the president's ouster.

Last week, the US State Department said it was concerned by the breakdown in political dialogue and UN chief Ban Ki-moon urged "restraint by all concerned."

The Honduran Congress approved late Thursday plans to investigate Zelaya and possibly declare him unfit to govern.
