Literacy with Lamps in RRC, Panjab University, Chandigarh

The RRC-cum-department of Community Education and Development organised International Literacy Day on on 8^th Sept. 2009 in collaboration with Salaam Zindgi, an NGO. A rally was organized which started from the department of RRC at 6.30 p.m. and ended at 7.30 p.m. The rally was flagged off by the Secretary to Vice-Chancellor, Prof. S.K. Sharma. The participants in the programmes were students from different department of Panjab University, migrant population, learners, nodal prereks, preraks and the students of department of RRC- Community Education and Development. About 70-80 participants participated in the programme. They were carrying candles to mark the observance of the day. Slogans prepared by the students of M.A. II of the Department were raised on women literacy. The Secretary to Vice-Chancellor Prof. S.K. Sharma addressed the gathering highlighting the importance of the day especially of female literacy. The participants were given T.Shirts with literacy logos and candles by the trust of Salaam Zindgi. Mr. Amrinder Singh from Salaam Zindgi delivered awareness talk on swine flu. The thrust of the activities for the National programme is on Sakshar Bharat with emphasis on women literacy. The RRC-cum-Dept. of Community Education and Development is designing the curriculum, imparting training and conducting research, evaluation for the literacy programmes under the Sakshar Bharat Mission for sustainable community development in the region. The programme has been launched by the Prime Minister at Vigyan Bhawan under the aegis of Women Literacy Programme. Dr. Ashwani Sharma, Dr. Navleen Kaur, Dr. Anuradha Sharma, Mrs. Binwant Pannun and staff of RRC organized the event.

The rally also had participation from other NGOs like Citizens Awareness Group, EDUCARE and Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Mohali.
