Amarinder predicts snap poll in Punjab, more rebellion in SAD
CHANDIGARH, May 18:
Former Chief Minister and the chairman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Campaign Committee, Capt Amarinder Singh today predicted mid term polls to the Punjab assembly as considerable resentment was brewing up within the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal. He said, there is also a strong possibility of the relationship between the SAD and its alliance partner BJP getting strained in the aftermath of the severe drubbing in the elections in Punjab.
He pointed out, the process had already started as the SAD had to expel two former and influential MLAs in Sangrur. “This is only the tip of the iceberg as much more is to follow and ultimately the government will fall”, he said, while adding, the two former MLAs expelled had a long and strong association with the SAD.
Capt Amarinder pointed out, the Congress had all the reasons to celebrate and rejoice the electoral verdict not just because it had won eight parliamentary seats in Punjab, but had also established substantial lead in 67 assembly segments. Besides, there was a 12 per cent increase in the vote share of the Congress over the last elections.
Moreover, the Campaign Committee chairman pointed out, the Congress did it all alone, while the SAD and BJP were in alliance. “We have not only managed to wrest six seats from the alliance, but have established that the Congress still remains the most popular party in the state”, he observed, while adding, it was only a matter of time when the Congress, like in the centre, would come to power in the state also.
Ridiculing the day dreaming of the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal about a “political implosion” in the Congress, Capt Amarinder remarked, he should better save his home first which has already started exploding. He pointed out, the process had already started with the expulsion of two former MLAs, while others were waiting in the wings to rebel.
The former Chief Minister expressed his pity for the junior Badal over boasting about his “achievement”. “I think somebody needs to explain to him that you have been defeated not only in eight parliamentary constituencies, but 67 assembly segments as well”, former Chief Minister remarked, while adding, “he (Badal) should see the writing on the wall as it is the beginning of the end for his government without his becoming the Chief Minister”.
Predicting an early mid term poll, Capt Amarinder remarked, “Badals would soon be history as people of Punjab have taken the first step to see them off by defeating them in eight parliamentary constituencies and 67 assembly segments”.
About Bathinda, Capt Amarinder said, instead of feeling proud the Badals should feel ashamed for “abusing the democratic process there by using all the unfair, unethical and foul means and cheating the electorate”. He said, everybody knows what means and methods they used to grab Bathinda. He pointed out, “the Badals contested the elections as if they were contesting Bathinda only with the entire clan stationed there…despite that they were not sure of victory and employed all the foul means
