Paris 1 August (Dhramvir Nagpal Paris 27 killed as Baghdad Shiite mosques bombed A string of bomb attacks targeting Shiite Muslim worshippers as they emerged from mosques across Baghdad on Friday killed 27 people and wounded more than 50,security officials said. The six apparently coordinated blasts occurred outside mosques and prayer centres in and around the capital, including one frequented by followers of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, they said. The worst attack was in the northeastern Baghdad district of Al-Shaab, where a car bomb killed 21 people and injured 35 others, an interior ministry official said. In twin bombings at Diyala bridge, 10 kilometres south of Baghdad, four people were killed and seven wounded. Attacks in Zafaraniyah and Kamaliyah neighbourhoods killed one person each and left six and three people wounded respectively. A separate attack in Al-Elam in western Baghdad injured four. Violence has dropped markedly throughout Iraq in recent months, but attacks increased in the run-up to the US military pullback a month ago from urban centres, with 437 Iraqis killed in June -- the highest death toll in 11 months. Attacks remain particularly common in the capital Baghdad and the restive northern city of Mosul.

Nandita Das is new Chairperson of Children's Film Society

Critically acclaimed film actress Nandita Das has been appointed as Chairperson of Children's Film Society of India (CFSI). Das, 39, would have a tenure of three years. Her predecessor Nafisa Ali had resigned a few months back to contest Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow. The actress, who created waves with her roles in films like Deepa Mehta's 'Fire' (1996) and 'Water' (1998), 'Bawander' (2000) and 'Amaar Bhuvan' (2002) and has bagged several national and international awards, has acted in movies in several languages including Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam and English. She made her directorial debut in 2008 with 'Firaaq' based on the aftermath of the Gujarat riots that won critical acclaim in various international film festivals. An alumnus of Delhi School of Social Work, she is the daughter of renowned painter Jatin Das and writer Varsha Das.

ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO CONTINUE PROBE AGAINST SAEED; INDIA

Enough evidence to continue probe against Saeed: India India has said there was "enough evidence" to continue investigation against Jamaat-ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed in connection with the Mumbai attacks even as it finalised response to the latest set of questions sent by Pakistan. The Home Ministry on Friday finalised its response to the queries from Pakistan and sent it to the Ministry of External Affairs which will hand it over to the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters at New Delhi on Saturday. "Yesterday, the Home Ministry has finalised the response to the latest set of questions sent by Pakistan in connection with the Mumbai attacks," he said. The response runs into seven pages with annexures, he added. Asked about the nature of the questions, Chidambaram said they were "routine" queries like "fill in the blanks" type. On Saeed, the Lashker-e-Toiba founder whom India has identified as the prime accused in the Mumbai attacks, Chidambaram said New Delhi has provided "enough evidence" against the JuD chief in three dossiers it gave to Islamabad. "There is enough evidence to continue probe against Saeed," he said.
